The Hero’s Journey and Addiction Recovery Part II

In the great monomyth, as depicted by Joseph Campbell, after the hero is shown in the ordinary world receiving the call and wrestling with it, there is still much left unwritten, as the bulk of the journey is yet to take place. (Read Part I Here) The story of addiction, and especially recovery, is not so unlike the great narratives of the past. True, it often seems we are compelled by something deep within us to root for the “addict’s journey”, as it complements the narrative of hope and achievement we find in the “hero’s journey” with great similarity.  From this ageless narrative, the grand story that calls to us, there is so much to be learned and understood.

We pick up the narrative with our hero questioning his call, tempted to return to the security of the life he knew before...

Step 4: Meeting the Mentor

Enter the influence of the wise old mentor. In the stories of old, the mentor-figure typically has some supernatural power, a weapon, or guidance to offer the hero, as they’re ready to receive it. In the narrative of addiction treatment and recovery, the mentors, although without supernatural powers, are endowed with something perhaps just as powerful: knowledge of the human condition. Therapists, doctors and treatment staff alike, they are armed with their own experiences, understanding, and weapons of communication, tools of mindfulness, and a basic map of the path forward.

Step 5: Crossing the First Threshold

That next step --met with some trepidation, of course-- is the hero’s first venture into the unknown. It represents the final decision to leave behind old ways of doing things, under the understanding that there is no turning back. This breakthrough might look like that first call to a treatment center, or it may come after weeks when you realize that you’re willing to try, to offer up a piece of yourself to the process. Either way, it represents the start of a new chapter; a turning of the page; a hope for the future.

Step 6: Trials, Friends, and Foes

Of course the story is not without obstacles to be overcome, trials to endure, and a test of character. The introduction of allies and enemies along the way invites our hero to root out the intentions of others, and his success depends upon his ability to align with the right supporters. This is not unlike our understanding that recovery is not successful when in isolation from others, or when we overlook their power to shape our path, for better or worse.

Step 7: Dragon’s Lair

Into the heart of the dragon’s lair the hero goes, risking health and security. The hero is closing in on his objective. Similarly, into one’s inner world we will lead our clients.

Step 8: Moment of Despair

It is not an easy task, demanding every ounce of energy and effort, on the path to growth, discovery and self- realization.  When all hope appears lost, the hero may again question the call. The darkness closing in is not always the death of the body but rather the death of the ego. Resolution comes when he learns to access hidden strength, and carry on towards the ultimate task: slaying the dragon.

On a macro level, this is the task of treatment, to walk our clients through the darkness, the trials and into the depths of realization, and helping them find community support and strength to forge a new path forward.

On a micro level, we also believe that it is the task of treatment to help encourage our clients to know that they are capable, that they are the heroes in their own narrative and to provide them opportunities where they can experience themselves as such. It is when they become conquerors of small successes that they easily build their confidence and can turn their attention to the king of the beasts, yet to be slain.

We can see how his metaphor can be incredibly powerful in inspiring motivation to carry on towards the ultimate goal. Learn more about our treatment philosophy at Peace Club that was designed to support you or your loved one on their journey, or give us a call today to learn more.
